Having done portraiture of so many versions over the years, fashion, catalog, dancers, actors, musicians, mamas, families and babies, it is a natural niche for me to photograph high school seniors. I love this work for many reasons but one of my solid commitments is showing people the Beautiful that they are. Not because they can pose just the right way or be edited into being pretty, truly beautiful. The kind of beautiful where you find yourself smiling back at an image even if you don't know the person. Smiling back at the image because you can immediately feel that person's heart.
High school is a complicated time. It is an age of being part child part adult, trying to find your way before you entirely know how. A time where you are soon to be free from anyone else's rules but you don't yet know what real independence feels like. It is scary and exciting and big. It is a time that could use affirmation. Images that show "I am strong and beautiful!" I get to dance with these young adults, help strengthen sense of self, encouraging them to dream even bigger, be even brighter. I get be a voice in their lives that is says "You are sacred and worthy of celebration."
I feel blessed that I get the opportunity to do just this. Life is full of miracles.
